Game notes from your Captain

5/17/2001
One of the most entertaining and interesting games in Pickle History. Final score was 25-11, but it wasn't as easy as it sounds. [Opposing team tied the game in the bottom of the 6th inning 11 - 11 -ed.] No entertainment by your captain in the outfield, however his J R Richard impression on the mound was worth the price of admission (except maybe to Mac and certainly not to Bones [who was the umpire for this game -ed.]. Sorry Do.).

A fabulous game. Nip & tuck all the way, ended up giving the 2 runs for a missing woman due to traffic, but still won in the home half of the 7th, 9 to 8.
The key to the victory was a tremendous defensive effort, led by great catches by Mark and Stan (with a truly Brodkin-esque play) in the later innings, and a highlight reel catch by Art for the final out of the 7th, to spark our way to the final offensive splurge.

We had a full squad for this game, and we won, 6 to (either 2 or 3) over one of the tougher teams on the schedule. It was also a real Tim Wakefield special, getting done in under an hour.
We took advantage of the deep outfield, and had them flying out a lot. (Lets hope we don't face them in the playoffs on a field with a shorter fence, like the Somerville field.) Joe was the main offensive force, at least by my count. The strict official scorer gave him two 4-base errors and no rbi, as opposed to two dingers and 4 rbi. Must be something about this field for Bones, where she's tough on her own team.

We had very little hitting, was the real reason. All 3 runs in one inning and three 1-2-3 innings. This team had its talents (and evidently some of us think their captain is cute), but our full squad beats them readily if we see them in the playoffs.
More importantly, Rich was injured by a fly ball that hit him right in the bridge of the nose. Hopefully he's OK, but no WC Fields comments if you see him at the next game.
From Rich: Just wanted to let you all know I'm alive and surviving after my mishap last night.
I did fracture my nose (and my ego) and today it looks pretty bad, but we'll know more in a few days when I get my stitches out. Hopefully I can return soon but obviously need to go easy for a bit. Thanks to Shirley again for staying with me at the hospital and for everyone's well-wishes.
Needless to say, just because I am out, I expect us to keep winning just like the Sox do when someone goes down, so I expect to see updates with victory scores!

We had a pretty full squad, but for those not there, we were able to stop our June Swoon tonight in Somerville. The final score was a slaughter rule win of 15 - 3, over a team that's a little better than their 1 & 7 record would show. Anyway, we got our bats going again and had good defense, and all were happy at the end.
